Aim of the programme

This programme aims to provide a career oriented educational programme for specialist midwives.

Admission requirements

  • Possession of a four-year Diploma in Nursing Science obtained at a College of Nursing in co-operation with a university.
  • A pass mark of at least 60 % in midwifery.
  • Registration as a nurse and midwife with the South African Nursing Council.
  • Proof of personal professional indemnity insurance coverage.
  • Written permission from employer to participate in the programme.
  • Proof of current position in a midwifery unit or proof of access to a relevant practice area.
  • At least one year experience in a maternity setting.

Articulation possibilities

The degree is:

  • Recognized by the South African Nursing Council as having met the national standards required for the qualification.
  • Recognized for entrance to the Research Masters degree in Midwifery.

Obtaining the degree

The degree shall be obtained by completing the prescribed modules and practical work.

Duration of study

The programme extends over a period of two academic years of part-time study.


The programme comprises the following modules

First year of study

  • Nursing Dynamics VNN401 (20C)
  • Clinical Pharmacology VCP401 (12C)
  • Research Essay VRE401(20C)

Second year of study

  • Obstetrics VHB401 (19C)
  • Advanced Clinical Midwifery VHB402 (19C)
  • Advanced Neonatal Nursing Science VHB403 (19C)
  • Advanced Midwifery and Neonatal Nursing Science Practica VHB404 (19C)


Each module will be evaluated by means of written assignments, oral case presentations and tests. The theory modules are evaluated by means of written examinations in June and November of each year. The practical is evaluated on a continuous formative basis. A summative evaluation in an OSCE format, is conducted in November of each year.
