The Head of the Department of Nursing Science, Prof RM van Rooyen was awarded the Fellowship of the Academy of Nursing in South Africa. She was one of only 10 persons in the country to be awarded this prestigious fellowship on the 2nd of August 2011.

Prof Dalena van Rooyen has made an extra-ordinary contribution to the field of health care in South Africa with her work as the research coordinator and executive committee member for the Forum for University Nursing Deans in South Africa. She is presently working on a national research strategy for FUNDISA. She is presently an executive board member of the Nursing Education Association (NEA) and has done ground breaking work for the organization. She founded the Port Elizabeth branch of NEA and is still chairperson of the branch. Prof van Rooyen has made a major contribution to Nursing Education in the Eastern Cape and has managed a substantial grant from Atlantic Philanthropies to build capacity in the Province. She is a member of Sigma Theta Tau international and has just recently facilitated the induction of all her staff and a number of clinical stakeholders into the Tau Lambda at Large Chapter of the STTI.
